Debbie Simock Named
Volunteer of the Year
Our Volunteer
of the Year for 2008 is a cherished board member and all
around great volunteer. Being a board member right off
the bat involves many meetings, a commitment of time
that often a busy person just has to fit in. In Debbie's
case, she fits in everything beautifully…career, family,
community. Churchill was right, we make a life by what
we give!
Debbie is
communications manager for Avista Corporation. Prior to
this position, Debbie
served for 15 years as community relations manager for
Avista Corp., and was a founder
of the Avista Foundation
where she also served as executive director.
Current
community involvement for Debbie is serving on the board
of directors for KSPS Friends of Seven where she has
been a member for six years, in addition to being an
active parent volunteer.
Since moving
to Spokane from her native South Carolina, Debbie has
served a number of organizations including the
University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Center Advisory
Board, Eastern Washington Museum Foundation Board of
Trustees, Spokane Public Schools Community Relations
Advisory Board and Community Colleges of Spokane
Community Relations Advisory Board.
She is a
graduate of Palmer College in Columbia, S.C., and
attended the University of South Carolina and Eastern
Washington University. Debbie is a graduate of
Leadership Spokane and holds a Certificate in Corporate
Community Relations from Boston College.
"I believe
passionately in the mission of KSPS/Friends of Seven and
want to do what I can to ensure that quality television
not just exists, but thrives in our region. The
children's programming on KSPS is a parent's dream, and
when my son was younger, I counted Arthur, Between the
Lions and Cyberchase among my favorite shows. Now our
family enjoys shows together like Antiques Roadshow,
NOVA and Globe Trekker."
Debbie and her
husband are the parents of a 13-year old son, Reed…and
Reed is learning from his mother the importance of
volunteering. He comes to assist us during our
membership drives. I guess you could say, we appreciate
the entire Simock family - We think they are pretty
great!
