The Roper Poll…what does it really mean?
For the last six years, PBS has been
a part of an opinion survey that included 1,009
participants across the US. The non-partisan,
international research company, GfK Roper Public
Affairs & Media organization conducted the survey.
Among adults ages 25 to 75, the GfK Roper asked a
series of questions.
"How much do you trust each
organization?" For the sixth consecutive year,
PBS ranked most trustworthy by 49%...followed by
Courts of Law, 27%, Commercial broadcast networks,
17%, cable television 12%, newspaper publishing
companies, 12%, the US Federal government, 10% and
the US Congress, 8%.
"The federal government provides
many services that are funded with tax dollars. For
each of the following services the federal
government provides using tax dollars, please rate
the value that you receive."
Military defense, 23%. PBS, 18%.
National Public Radio, 14%. Police and law
enforcement, 14%. Federal aid to college students,
9%. Medical and technological research, 9%. Space
program, 9%.
"Who provides PBS most of its
money?"
Individuals, 35%. Foundations,
23%. Corporations, 13%. Federal Government, 10%.
State governments, 3%. At this station, 71% of our
overall budget comes from individuals! Can you see
why we appreciate YOU so much?
This was an interesting question
asked, because we are always being accused of being
so liberal, the answers given really surprised even
us! "When it comes to news coverage,
investigations and discussions of major issues,
would you say these networks’ programs are strongly
liberal, moderately liberal, moderately
conservative, strongly conservative or are they
mostly fair?"
