KSPS is the culmination of a 27 year broadcast career that has included stops in cities from Norfolk, Virginia to Houston, Texas. He was President and General Manager of NBC-affiliate WVTM-TV in Birmingham from 1996 to 2001 and during that time co-chaired a successful multi-million dollar campaign to raise funds to repair Birmingham’s iconic statue of Vulcan. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton in Ohio and is a graduate of both Leadership Birmingham and Leadership Alabama.
Gary is a native of Philadelphia, PA and is a past member of the Radio-Television News Directors Association. A tireless community supporter, he served on the Advisory Committee of the Communications Studies Department of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Marketing Committee of Aldridge Botanical Gardens.
Gary has served on many boards of directors including the Empire Health Foundation, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Visitors of the University of Alabama’s College of Communications, the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and most recently, the Mid-New Friends of KSPS Executive Director Gary Stokes.
Alabama Region of the Red Cross, the group that was a key factor in the relief efforts from the April 27 tornados. In addition he also served as program co-chair of Leadership Birmingham’s Class of 2008 and headed the State Employees Campaign of the 2007 United Way campaign.
In September of 2013, after the transfer of ownership of KSPS from Spokane Public Schools to the Friends of KSPS, Gary was named General Manager of the station.
