Essay Contest Winner Named!
KSPS partnered with Mountain Gear to bring you the Ken Burns miniseries, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea — as well as a host of local events focusing on raising awareness about, and encouraging exploration of, our National Parks.
One of these local events was the KSPS and Mountain Gear National Parks Essay Contest aimed at area Fifth Grade students and addressing the theme, “What is important about the National Parks and why you think they are important to our lives today?” Staff and volunteers pored over a stack of very impressive and thoughtful entries before narrowing it down to our eventual winner; and that winner is:
Fiona Beamis
Logan Elementary, Spokane, WA
Fiona’s essay was inspirational, mature and very persuasive. Way to go, Fiona!
Fiona and her family will be receiving (1) Trip for four (4) to Glacier National Park, including: a $100 fuel voucher; park entrance fee and 2 nights of camping; a Marmot Den 4-person tent; 4 Marmot EcoPro 30 sleeping bags; 4 Marmot Eiger 35 backpacks; 4 Marmot Precip jackets; and 4 Marmot Precip pants.
In addition, all of our entrants received a small camping accessory prize just for entering, courtesy of Mountain Gear. We would like to thank all of the children who submitted essays — your thoughts and ideas are proof that the world we pass on to future generations will be in good hands.
We would also like especially thank Mountain Gear for their support of funding, time and merchandise in helping to bring the story of our National Parks to our viewers and for making possible such a rich variety of companion events to coincide with this landmark television series.
