Online our Northwest Profiles story on the Fox Theater A few weeks ago, Spokane’s historic Fox
Theater reopened, to the great excitement of the
community. On Jan. 17, KSPS viewers will see, up close,
the resurrection of the theater from a tired and shabby
discount movie house to an elegant regional performing
arts center. Cameras take the viewer 50 feet above the
auditorium floor to witness the painstaking cleaning and
restoration of the hand-painted murals on the ceiling
and for a behind-the-scenes look at how the original
colors were discovered under layers of paint, cigarette
smoke and popcorn grease.
Artisans at work in their studios reveal
the craftsmanship that went into creating the elaborate
Art Deco light fixtures. KSPS has followed the project
for the past three years and has captured every aspect
of the renovation. From dressing rooms to draperies, air
conditioning to acoustics, interviews with architects,
paint restorers, construction workers and historians
tell the fascinating story of the preservation of this
Art Deco treasure.
