The annual Reading Rainbow contest is here and we'd love to read your stories.

Local Prizes:

Literacy backpacks filled with an assortment of games, books, DVDS and other cool items will be awarded to local winners, and every child that enters will receive a certificate signed by Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton.

National Prizes:

  • Grand Prize: laptops
  • Second Place: flat panel TVs with DVDs
  • Third Place: MP3 Players

    Each national winner will also receive 3 sets of DVDs with books – a set for their home, school, and community library. The 12 national winning stories will also be featured on the Reading Rainbow PBS website

Eligibility
  • The Contest is open to students who are in Kindergarten, First, Second or Third grades.
  • Employees of sponsors, any participating PBS station or their affiliates, manufacturers, sales reps, subsidiaries or parent companies, advertising/sales promotion agencies, judges and the immediate families of each are not eligible. Void where prohibited.
  • Sponsors are not responsible for lost, late, damaged, misdirected or illegible Entry Forms or unsuccessful attempts to notify the prize recipients.
  • All materials and information submitted as part of the Entry Form must be the participant's own original work.
  • The Entry Form may not contain any unauthorized use of names, likenesses or biographical information of any third parties.
Entry Guidelines
  • Entrants must be in Kindergarten, First, Second, or Third grade.
  • Only one entry per person will be accepted.
  • Only single-author stories qualify (no co-authored stories).
  • Stories can be fact or fiction, prose, or poetry.
Word Count
  • Kindergarten & First grade stories must have a minimum of 50 or maximum of 200 words.
  • Second & Third grade stories must have a minimum of 100 or maximum of 350 words.
  • The word count includes "a," "an," & "the," but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page.
Story Text
  • Text must be printed legibly (or typed).
  • Children who cannot write may dictate their story to an adult.
  • Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on individual pages.
  • Non-English text must be translated on the same page and the translation text must adhere to word count.
  • Invented spelling is accepted.
Format & Illustrations
  • Stories must have at least 5 original, clear, and colorful illustrations.
  • Stories must be created on one side of paper and numbered on back of each page.
Entry Form
  • Entry form must be complete, legible, and must include parent (and teacher, if appropriate) signature.
  • Each entry must include the official READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Entry Form, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the signature of the sponsoring teacher), confirming that the story and art are original, and granting permission to use the entry for promotional purposes.
Return of Entries
  • The Contest administrators will make every effort, but are not required, to return entries only if accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope of an appropriate size.
  • READING RAINBOW or local stations are not responsible for late, lost, stolen, misdirected, damaged, mutilated, incomplete, or illegible entries, or postage-due mail.
Rights Associated with Contest
  • Winners grant the right to use their names and likenesses in advertising and promotion without further compensation or permission, except where prohibited by law.
  • By entering, entrants agree to abide by the above stated rules, and warrant that their entry is their original work and does not infringe upon or violate rights of any third party.
  • No royalties will be paid at this or any time.
The Prizes
  • Locally there will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd places winners for each grade level (K-3).

  • The prizes will consist of a Reading Rainbow Backpack with various levels of items consisting of books, games, DVDs and various other literacy based items.

  • The 1st place winner from each grade level will have their story submitted directly to Reading Rainbow to compete at the national level. All local winners will be notified by May 15th, 2007.
