SPOKANE, WA — KSPS PBS is thrilled to welcome the community to the third annual Future Day event, set to take place Saturday, February 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Spokane Community College Lair Student Center. Children are invited to explore trades and careers through dozens of interactive activities led by local businesses, colleges, nonprofits and community groups.
Last year’s event drew about 400 participants, and KSPS PBS is partnering with diverse local businesses and organizations for another year of fun and discovery. Kids can try activities focused on engineering, art, public-safety, healthcare and more. Each activity station can be completed in about 4-7 minutes, so kids can try many different careers and skills.
“Future Day is about giving children the opportunity to explore and find what excites them. It’s a chance to discover what they're capable of, and imagine who they might be,” says Angela Riley, Education Director at KSPS PBS. “It's also about helping children connect those dreams to the careers, jobs and opportunities that exist right in their own backyard.”
Current partners for this year’s event include Cat Tales Wildlife Center, Washington State Patrol, EWU Dental Hygiene, Spokane Symphony and more. In total, KSPS PBS plans for about 30 activity stations. The event will also provide children with an opportunity to meet beloved PBS KIDS television characters, Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kitty Kat.
Workforce development is a key initiative at KSPS PBS. Leveraging its television station, film production crew and educational programs, KSPS PBS partners with businesses and organizations to educate current and future generations about opportunities in their industries. KSPS PBS’s Career Explore NW program has produced 160 videos featuring career pathways and helping regional employers create a talent pipeline.
Future Day serves as an extension of KSPS PBS’s commitment to spotlighting local careers, providing younger children with a chance to see what excites them, what’s possible and what they may even want to do professionally one day.
This event is open to all families, and KSPS PBS encourages everyone to drop by and be a part of this vibrant experience. The activity stations are geared towards elementary-aged children, but all ages are welcome. No registration is needed – just come, participate, and let the fun begin!
